4/16/23 blog post 4

For the final two weeks, I helped out with finalizing some of the art assets for the fire launcher, and using some of the existing boss flame assets to create the flames for the fire launcher. I also helped playtest and report bugs, and most of all I was able to observe the hard work that everyone put into the project this semester!

Similar to the arrow launcher, I used textured brushes and colors that matched the environment to make the fire launcher match with the tileset and location. I was inspired by one of the other artist’s creation of the whale pistol that the player could use, and I used a shark as the base of the design for the fire launcher. I thought that a design that had a big gas tank at the bottom and a trigger/pulley at the end would work well, since I was envisioning it as something that could be manually controlled or something that could trigger automatically if the player walked within range. Another art asset I worked on was fixing up the flames of the background for the boss monster, extending them to reduce the "cut out" look that was there before.

Unfortunately, due to other classwork and being busy with final projects, I wasn’t able to create the environment loading screens - but I was able to draft the designs for the fire launcher for implementation. Overall, working on the project within WolverineSoft Studio taught me a lot about working with a team and how much consideration needs to be given to every element that is in the game. One of my fears this semester was not contributing enough to the team, or not knowing enough about Unity or art implementation into the game to help - however, everyone in the studio was very helpful with any questions that I had, and were very kind about teaching me anything I needed to now. I learned a lot about time management and tracking hours that I worked on material for the studio, and it was always amazing to see how art that I created or designs that I drafted eventually ended up being in the game. Most of all, I was always impressed by how well everyone collaborated on everything, from the theme of the game to fixing bugs and thinking of any concepts for enemies, tilesets, environment art, and player design. There are still so many things that I’d like to keep learning, such as Unity and more about the UI design! I’m really proud of all the work that I contributed this semester, and all the work that everyone contributed to the project. I had a great time working with everyone, and I hope that people will enjoy the game!
